Perennials, Annuals, or Biennials?

In case you were wondering, there are three types of flowering plants, which are categorized by how long the plants that hold the blooms last. One type is called annuals, and these plants need to be planted again each year to get the flowers again. With some annuals, the plant structure dies after its season is over. Biennials tend to last for two years. Their plant structure does not live, but a new plant structure grows up the next season.

Alternately, there are flowering plants called perennials where the plants grow out of the ground again for many years, many from a structure called a bulb. Many of these plants only need to be planted once in order to flower again in the same spot year after year like crocuses.

Some plants like tulips, lilies, and irises will not likely bloom in the same number as other perennials. This is because some of them have bulbs that split annually, and then they do not have enough energy left to bloom after a few years as you can see here: https://www.longfield-gardens.com/article/How-to-Care-for-Spring-Flower-Bulbs-After-They-Bloom.
